I recently got a packet of Groundnuts from a Super Market. On saturday, I pressure cooked it with a little salt added. I removed the skin and neatly put a hand full of it in Joshua’s little plate. Joshua tasted each one of it with so much of curiosity and he loved it. Kids of this stage prefer finger foods and I observed that his intake was pretty good, rather than when being fed. I actually understood, he is no more a baby and that he has grown up and its high time that he needs his bit of freedom to decide on what and how to eat, as long as its health ūüėČ

Mixed Vegetable Soup

Getting¬†babies exposed to vegetables increase the probability of them preferring vegetables in the future! Its rather important to introduce vegetables before fruits ūüôā This mixed vegetable can be given with a lot of variations given below.

Ingredients:

  1. Potato (half)
  2. Tomato (Quarter)
  3. Beans (2-3)
  4. Grated Carrots (1)
  5. Curry leaves.
  6. Cilantro

Method:

  1.  Clean the vegetables.
  2.  In a Sauce pan, cook the vegetables in water.
  3. Add salt to taste.
  4. Add Cinnamon for flavour.
  5. Puree the vegetables and serve warm

Serving Suggestions:

You can also add mashed peas, cabbage and Pepper.

Oats Porridge

Oats is a high source of fibre.

Ingredients:

  1. Rolled Oats
  2. Sugar to taste
  3. Milk
  4. Raisins
  5. Dried Apricots

Method :

  1. Dry grind the oats into fine powder.
  2. Add milk, sugar, raisins and dried apricots in a sauce pan and bring it to boil
  3. Simmer while stirring occasionally.
  4. Serve when warm

Serving Suggestions:

Serve with pureed/ finely chopped Pear fruit.

Nutritional Information:

Dried Apricots are good source of Betacarotene, Iron and Potassium.

Fruit Recipes – Apple Puree

Variety of fruits can be given to babies.

Apple Puree – Ingredients:

  1.  Fuji Apple ( or any naturally sweet variety)

Method:

  1. Peel, core and chop the apples into fine pieces.
  2. Steam cook / bring it to boil with an inch of water.
  3. Puree the steamed apples and serve.

Combinations:

You can also combine pureed Banana, steamed and pureed Pears, Yoghurt, Avacado or any other fruit. (after the four day rule). Please avoid apple sauce if your baby constipates.

Sago Pudding / Kheer

This is an excellent cure for diarrhoea.

Ingredients:

  1. 2 – 4 tbsp Sago / Javvarisi / Sabudana
  2. 1 cup Milk
  3. Sugar to taste
  4. Cardomon Powder
  5. Raisins
  6. Ghee

Method:

  1. Clean the Sago in water and keep aside.
  2. Bring the milk to boil and add the Sago
  3. Cook for a few minutes until Sago looks sticky
  4. Add Sugar, Cardamom powder and raisins.
  5. Keep aside and serve warm.

Nutritional Information:

It is an excellent source of Carbohydrates.

Homemade Vs Commercial Baby Food

You might ask me – What’s wrong with using Jarred/ Commercial baby foods? Take a Commercial baby food and check the Expiry Date. You will find that the food inside has been made to last for at least 1 – 2 years since the Manufactured Date. Is that what you intend to feed your baby?

The ingredients in Commercial baby foods are heated for very high temperatures and cooled to sterilise them. This makes it last longer, but removes a lot of flavour and some nutrients. Also exposure to processed foods, might cause digesting food in its actual form to  be difficult.

May be we can give them Commercial baby foods for the sake of convenience, but they are definitely not the healthier option. The best food that we can offer could be, what we prepare ourselves! We can be sure of what ingredients we use, hygiene and ensure that there are no thickeners and additives.

Trust Me! You can have plenty of combinations and variety which your baby would love!

Carrot Kheer – Carrot Pudding

Ingredients :

1 cup Grated carrots

1 cup Milk

*1 tsp Ghee

*Sugar

*1 tsp Cardomon Powder

*1 tsp Soaked and ground Almond powder.

* – Optional

Method :

  1. Pressure cook the grated carrots with milk.
  2. Strain the milk and mash the cooked carrots finely.
  3. In a fry pan add a tsp of Ghee and mix the mashed carrots.
  4. Add the Strained milk to get a fine consistency.
  5. Add the Cardomon Powder and Almond powder.
  6. Serve when warm.

Nutritional Info :

Carrots are good source of Dietary fiber, Manganeese, Niacin, Pottassium, Thiamin,
